The Root of Your Pain
Why Symptoms Are Messages, Not Problems
There's a question I ask every woman I work with, usually in the first few minutes of our first conversation.
Not "what are your symptoms?"
Not "what have you tried?"
But this:
What do you think your body is trying to tell you?
Most women pause. Some cry. Almost all of them say some version of the same thing:
"Nobody has ever asked me that before."
And that, right there, is the problem.
The medical model looks at symptoms. TCM looks at roots.
Conventional medicine is brilliant at identifying and managing symptoms. But for women with endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain and hormonal imbalance, symptom management is rarely enough — because the symptom is never the whole story.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine there is a concept that underpins everything: Biao and Ben — branch and root.
The branch is what you can see. The pain, the inflammation, the fatigue, the heavy bleeding. These are real and they matter and they deserve to be taken seriously.
But the root is what created the branch. And until you address the root, the branch will keep growing back — no matter how many times you cut it down.
This is why so many women with endometriosis find that surgery brings temporary relief but doesn't resolve the underlying pattern. The branch has been removed. The root remains.
So what is the root?
In my experience the root of chronic pain is almost never just one thing.
It is usually a combination of:
🌿 Physical patterns
How you move, eat, sleep and rest. Whether you push through when your body asks for gentleness. Whether you nourish your Winter phase or override it. Whether you've been running on cortisol for so long that your nervous system has forgotten what safe feels like.
💜 Emotional patterns
In TCM every organ system is connected to an emotional state. The liver — which governs the smooth flow of Qi and is central to endometriosis in TCM — is directly affected by suppressed anger, frustration and resentment. The kidneys — the seat of your deepest vitality — are depleted by chronic fear and exhaustion.
I spent decades swallowing my own needs. Saying yes when I meant no. Carrying more than my share and calling it strength. My body was holding all of it — and eventually it couldn't hold any more.
🌀 Energetic patterns
This is the part that's hardest to quantify but often the most profound. Where in your body do you hold tension? Where do you contract when you're stressed? Where does the pain live — and what was happening in your life when it first arrived?
These are not abstract questions. They are diagnostic ones.
Six ways to start finding your root
1. 👂 Listen without judgment
Pain is your body's most persistent communication. Before you try to fix it, try to hear it. What is it saying? When does it get louder? What makes it softer? Start tracking — even just noting patterns in She Thrives™ can begin to reveal things you've never noticed before.
2. 📖 Explore the emotional connections
Journalling, therapy, the Womb Wisdom Reflection practice in She Thrives™ — any practice that helps you access what's beneath the surface is valuable here. The question isn't "am I stressed?" but "what am I carrying that my body is being asked to hold?"
3. 🔍 Consider the whole picture
Diet, movement, sleep, stress, relationships, work — pain is rarely caused by one thing. The body is an interconnected system and addressing one area almost always benefits the others. Where is the most obvious imbalance in your life right now?
4. 🤝 Seek the right support
Working with a holistic practitioner who understands the root cause model — not just the symptom management model — changes everything. Collaborative care that blends TCM, yoga therapy, breathwork and emotional support can uncover answers that conventional approaches miss entirely.
5. 🧘 Commit to gentle daily practices
Yoga, breathwork, meditation, yin practices — these don't just manage symptoms. They create the conditions in which your nervous system can finally feel safe enough to begin healing. Even five minutes a day compounds over time into something profound.
6. 🌱 Be patient with the process
This is the one nobody wants to hear — but it's the most important. Healing is not linear. There will be days that feel like regression. Celebrate the small shifts. Trust your body's intelligence. It has been trying to heal all along — it just needed the right conditions.
