Your Hormones Are Not Your Enemy

Stop blaming your hormones. They're not working against you — they're trying to talk to you. Once you understand what each one is actually saying, everything changes.

What They're Really Trying to Tell You?

Let me say something that might surprise you.

Your hormones are not the problem.

I know. When you're exhausted, in pain, crying for no reason or lying awake at 3am with a racing heart, it's very tempting to blame them. To see them as unpredictable, chaotic, working against you.

But here's what Traditional Chinese Medicine taught me — and what twenty five years of living in a complex hormonal body confirmed:

Your hormones are messengers. And every message they send has a meaning.

The question isn't how to silence them. It's how to learn their language.

What your major hormones are actually saying

🌸 Oestrogen — the architect

Oestrogen is often called the primary female hormone — and for good reason. It regulates your menstrual cycle, supports bone density, promotes healthy skin and tissue, and plays a profound role in how you feel emotionally and cognitively.

In TCM, oestrogen's rise in the follicular phase corresponds to the building of Yin — the cool, nourishing, receptive energy that prepares the body for ovulation. When oestrogen is well supported, you feel creative, clear and connected. When it's out of balance — too high or too low — everything feels off.

What it might be saying when it's low: I need more nourishment. More rest. More Yin-building foods — flaxseeds, legumes, dark leafy greens.

🌿 Progesterone — the peacemaker

Often called the calming hormone, progesterone works alongside oestrogen to regulate your cycle and support pregnancy. It has a deeply soothing effect on the nervous system — which is why low progesterone in your luteal phase can feel like sudden anxiety, sleep disturbances and emotional fragility that seems to come from nowhere.

In TCM this corresponds to the building of Yang after ovulation — warming, stabilising, protective energy. When progesterone is depleted, that Yang warmth is missing and the nervous system feels exposed.

What it might be saying when it's low: I need warmth. Fewer stimulants. More magnesium. Earlier nights. Gentler evenings.

⚡ Testosterone — the activator

Women produce testosterone too — and it matters more than most people realise. It contributes to muscle strength, energy, libido and that sense of drive and motivation that makes you feel like yourself.

As levels naturally decline with age — and particularly after surgical menopause — many women describe feeling flat, unmotivated or disconnected from their bodies in ways they struggle to articulate.

In TCM, this vitality is closely related to Kidney Yang — the warming, activating force that underlies all energy in the body.

What it might be saying when it's low: I need movement. Strength-based practices. Kidney-nourishing foods — walnuts, black sesame, bone broth.

🌀 Cortisol — the alarm system

The stress hormone. Vital for responding to genuine threats — but catastrophic when chronically elevated by the relentless demands of modern life.

High cortisol depletes progesterone, disrupts oestrogen, impairs thyroid function, raises blood sugar and keeps your nervous system locked in fight-or-flight. In TCM, chronic stress causes Liver Qi Stagnation — and for women with endometriosis, this is often the single most significant driver of symptoms.

What it might be saying when it's high: I need you to stop. To breathe. To say no to something. To rest before you hit the wall.

The Womb Wisdom Reflection practice inside She Thrives™ is specifically designed for this — daily, accessible, gentle nervous system support in your pocket. And for breathwork practices, come and find me on YouTube:

🍯 Insulin — the energy regulator

Insulin controls blood sugar and energy production — and when it's dysregulated, the effects ripple through everything. Mood swings, energy crashes, brain fog, weight changes that seem disconnected from what you're eating.

In TCM, this relates closely to Spleen Qi — the digestive fire that transforms food into energy and clear thought. When Spleen Qi is weak, dampness accumulates, energy stagnates and the mind becomes foggy.

What it might be saying when it's dysregulated: I need warm, regular, nourishing meals. Less sugar. More fibre. Eating without distraction.

🦋 Thyroid hormones — the metabolism keepers

T3 and T4, produced by the thyroid gland, regulate metabolism, energy and mood. An underactive thyroid can mimic so many other conditions — fatigue, weight gain, depression, hair loss, feeling cold — that it's frequently missed or dismissed.

In TCM the thyroid is closely connected to Kidney Yang — the same warming force that governs testosterone and overall vitality. Supporting your kidneys supports your thyroid.

What it might be saying when it's sluggish: I need warmth, rest, iodine-rich foods and a reduction in chronic stress.

💜 Oxytocin — the connection hormone

The love hormone. Released during physical touch, breastfeeding, laughter, deep conversation — and yes, during yoga and meditation too.

Oxytocin is profoundly anti-inflammatory. It calms the nervous system, reduces cortisol and creates the felt sense of safety that healing requires. In TCM this resonates deeply with Heart Shen — the spirit that lives in the heart and governs our capacity for connection, joy and peace.

What it might be saying: I need more connection. More touch. More laughter. More of what makes you feel held.

🌙 Melatonin — the rhythm keeper

Your sleep hormone. Produced in darkness, suppressed by light — and absolutely essential for the kind of deep, restorative sleep in which your body does its most profound healing work.

In TCM, the hours between 11pm and 3am are governed by the gallbladder and liver — the very organ systems most implicated in endometriosis and hormonal imbalance. Disrupted sleep during these hours directly impacts hormonal regulation.

What it might be saying: I need darkness. Screens off earlier. A quieter, cooler bedroom. A wind-down practice that signals safety to your nervous system.

The thread connecting all eight

Did you notice something?

Every single one of these hormones is profoundly affected by stress, sleep, movement and how well you nourish yourself. Not just physically — but emotionally and energetically too.

This is not a coincidence. This is your body's intelligence.

Your hormones are not random. They are responsive. They shift and adapt based on how you live, how you rest, how you move and — perhaps most importantly — how safe your nervous system feels.

Understanding them doesn't just change how you manage your symptoms. It changes your entire relationship with your body.

And that is where real healing begins.
